La’Miya’s Story
In April 2019, when La’Miya was just three years old, her grandmother noticed a small lump on her stomach. She was immediately taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where an ultrasound and MRI confirmed that the lump was a malignant tumor. The tumor had overtaken almost 90% of her right kidney, and doctors had to remove the kidney right away.
Two weeks later, La’Miya began treatment that included seven days of radiation and ten months of chemotherapy. To help her understand, her mom explained that she had a “poisonous flower” in her belly that needed to be removed. On January 15, 2020, La’Miya completed her last chemotherapy treatment, and on January 24 she proudly rang the bell to celebrate being cancer-free.
